Ink & stick

This piece, along with a similar portrait of Martin Luther King, was done on a huge piece of paper by dipping a stick in India Ink. I found the stick outside. As you work, the stick soaks up more and more ink until the entire thing is black. It gives you a surprising amount of control but is still unpredictable enough to free you from trying to be too controlling.
