American Gods

rating 8By Neil Gaiman

American GodsI've read every work of Neil Gaiman's I can get my hands on. This is certainly up there among his best works. It tells the story of the fate of gods - where they are today and how they manipulate events to try to retain their former power, against new, modern gods. Gaiman creates a spooky blend of the real world and an amazing dark fantasy underbelly existing simultaneously - much as he did in Neverwhere. But while that book was quintessentially British, here Gaiman creates a great American novel, as his protagonist, Shadow, travels across the country. Gaiman's writing style is rich, detailed, scary, fun and highly recommended.
